Today, there are 645,000 people living with disabilities in Canada, aged 25 to 64 years, who are not employed and not currently in school. The employment rate of people with disabilities (65%) remains lower than that of people without disabilities (80%) (Statistics Canada, 2022).
Empowerment Beyond Barriers: Navigating Your Journey with the Newcomers disAbility Toolkit!
In 2022, Statistics Canada revealed that nearly one in five Canadians aged 15 and over has one or more disabilities. Despite comprising such a significant portion of the population, only 62 percent of working-age Canadians with disabilities are employed. For newcomers with disabilities, this employment gap is often widened by barriers such as language and culture barriers, unfamiliarity with the local labour market, and unawareness of the resources available to support people with disabilities.

Inspired by the ACCESSIBLE BC ACT, we are developing an accessibility committee with representation of people with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, and which more broadly reflect the diversity of the BC population.
